iMAGINE Upstate – A 2016 Miss South Carolina Platform

Less than a year ago, as a volunteer at a CU-ICAR event, I was first introduced to the iMAGINE Upstate program. I vividly remember this event because I saw the hands-on experience at the iMAGINE Upstate table showcasing arts and technology intertwined. The activity involved designing and coloring a car on plain paper and the Crayola ColorStudio HD app for Hot Wheels. After coloring my car, we scanned the image into the app. Suddenly the car colored on paper was now a full functioning race car in the app. I was engaged!

In May of 2015, through my high school, I had the opportunity to intern for iMAGINE Upstate. Serving as the marketing intern since the end of August 2015, I have had enjoyed furthering my interest in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education. Just as the program promotes hands-on experiences, I am grateful to be actively involved in my duties under the mentorship of Melissa Huff, Event Director.

Why iMAGINE Upstate?

Winning the title of Miss Greer Middle College after competing in my high school’s pageant, I have decided to participate as a contestant in the 2016 Miss South Carolina Pageant. Recognizing the importance of STEAM education, I have selected iMAGINE Upstate as my Miss South Carolina Platform. I encourage females to take an active interest in STEAM. I can personally advocate that STEAM education has contributed to my success and allowed me to become a well rounded woman ready to start my career. I am constantly inspired by the women of the STEAM world I have met and particularly those I have made contact with through iMAGINE Upstate. These women are redefining what it means to be an engineer, an entrepreneur, a computer scientist, or anything imaginable.

STEAM impacts life daily. The Upstate of South Carolina is recognized for its advancements in STEAM through companies including ScanSource, Duke Energy, Fluor, Michelin North America, GE Power, and Bosch. Career readiness can aid in driving prosperous growth in the state of South Carolina.

In the fall of 2016, I intend to enroll at Clemson University. Pursuing a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) career field, I will study Packaging Science and minor in Graphic Communications.

As the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization searches for the All-American woman, I hope to advocate iMAGINE Upstate where STEAM comes together to challenge individuals of all ages to imagine.

#imagineIF you choose to pursue a STEAM career!
